FIFA president Gianni Infantino continues to face growing pressure over his leadership despite receiving fresh backing from key football bodies, with the president of the Norwegian Football Federation, Lise Klaveness, becoming the latest high-profile figure to call for his resignation.
Klaveness said Infantino no longer enjoys the institutional trust required to lead world football, accusing the FIFA president of presiding over a period of deep division within the game following the collapse of his controversial proposal to commercialize part of the World Cup through the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE).
Speaking after a meeting of the Norwegian FA board, Klaveness said the federation would continue pressing for Infantino’s departure through direct dialogue with FIFA rather than seeking an extraordinary UEFA meeting.
The latest criticism comes just a day after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) unanimously reaffirmed its support for Infantino, highlighting an increasingly divided football landscape ahead of FIFA’s presidential election in 2027.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe praised Infantino’s contribution to African football and stressed the importance of collaboration, governance and due process, while the continental body’s executive committee threw its weight behind his bid for another term in office.
The backing from Africa represents a significant boost, with CAF accounting for 54 of FIFA’s 211 member associations.
Infantino has come under sustained scrutiny since FIFA abandoned plans to sell part of the commercial rights to future World Cups through the FFE proposal following widespread opposition from several national associations and confederations.
The controversy has sparked criticism from a number of prominent football figures in recent days, with concerns focusing on governance, transparency and the decision-making process surrounding the proposal.
Despite the mounting calls for change from parts of Europe, the support from CAF underlines the challenge facing Infantino’s critics, who would require broad international backing to mount a serious challenge to his leadership when FIFA next elects its president.
With football’s governing body now split between supporters and opponents of the current administration, the debate over FIFA’s future leadership appears set to remain one of the sport’s defining issues in the months ahead.
