Just days after suffering one of the most heartbreaking moments of his career, Somali referee, Omar Artan has received a stunning measure of justice and recognition.

The 34-year-old official, who was denied entry into the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite being selected as one of the tournament referees;

 – will not only receive full compensation from FIFA for the matches he was unable to officiate, but

 – has also been handed one of the biggest appointments in world football.

In an extraordinary twist,

UEFA has named Artan as the referee for the 2026 UEFA Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria

making him the first African referee ever to take charge of a major UEFA final.

For a man whose World Cup dream was cruelly cut short before a single whistle was blown, the decision represents a remarkable turnaround.

FIFA to Pay Omar Artan Despite World Cup Exclusion

Sources have confirmed that FIFA will fully remunerate Artan for his World Cup assignments despite his controversial exclusion from the tournament.

Artan, widely regarded as Africa’s leading referee and the 2025 CAF Men’s Referee of the Year, was denied entry upon arriving in Miami last week to join the World Cup officials’ camp.

A statement from U.S. Border and Customs Protection cited “vetting concerns” as the reason for his removal from the country.

The exact amount FIFA will pay Artan has not yet been determined because it depends on the number of matches he would have officiated during the tournament.

The decision is seen by many as FIFA’s acknowledgement that the Somali official should not suffer financially after being prevented from carrying out his duties.

His case sparked international outrage and renewed debate about immigration restrictions affecting participants at the expanded 48-team World Cup.

World Cup Dream Crushed Before It Began

Artan had been preparing to make history as the first Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup.

Having earned global recognition for his performances across African football, including officiating the second leg of the 2025-26 CAF Champions League final, Artan’s selection was viewed as a landmark achievement for Somalia and African refereeing.

Instead, his journey ended abruptly at Miami International Airport.

According to reports, Artan was denied entry after arriving in the United States and was subsequently returned to Turkey before eventually flying home to Somalia.

The controversy intensified when FIFA President Gianni Infantino responded to criticism by urging observers to:

“chill and relax”

His comments drew criticism from many who believed FIFA should have done more to protect one of its appointed officials.

UEFA Super Cup

UEFA Steps In With Historic Gesture

While FIFA struggled to resolve the situation, UEFA moved swiftly.

In a statement, European football’s governing body confirmed that Artan would referee the UEFA Super Cup showdown between Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League champions Aston Villa on August 12 in Salzburg.

UEFA said:

“Following discussions with its sister confederation, Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), UEFA has today appointed Somali referee Omar Artan to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, which will take place on 12 August in Salzburg between UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and UEFA Europa League winners Aston Villa FC.”

The governing body highlighted Artan’s credentials, adding:

“Despite his young age, Artan has established himself as one of the world’s top referees and has been on the FIFA international list since 2018.”

“Among the most notable matches he has officiated is the second leg of the 2025-26 CAF Champions League final.”

“In recognition of his performances, he received the CAF Men’s Referee of the Year Award 2025.”

UEFA further explained that the appointment was part of the growing partnership between UEFA and CAF.

“The decision to appoint Artan to officiate the UEFA Super Cup match has been made in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) recently signed between UEFA and CAF to encourage cooperation in many areas, including refereeing.”

The statement concluded:

“UEFA and CAF are united by a shared commitment to developing football at all levels and promoting the core values of unity, equality and non-discrimination.”

“Football Is Meant to Unite People” – UEFA

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin praised Artan’s abilities and explained why the organization felt compelled to act.

“Omar Artan is an excellent young but already experienced referee, who has proven himself at the highest competition level of the Confederation of African Football.”

Ceferin added:

“Football is made to connect people, and UEFA wants to show its respect to Omar and his outstanding officiating skills, which had earned him such a prestigious nomination.”

He also thanked CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

“I am grateful to my friend CAF President Patrice Motsepe for supporting enthusiastically our initiative.”

U.S. Government Defends Its Decision

Despite widespread criticism, U.S. authorities have stood firmly behind their decision to deny Artan entry.

Speaking during a press conference, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended the action.

“Policies are, we’re not going to allow people that have criminal or maybe proceed to be have criminal ties to come into this country.”

“I don’t care what your situation is.”

Mullin continued:

“We, I’m not going to get into why we denied this individual, but there’s a reason why this person was denied.”

He rejected claims that the decision was motivated by anti-Somali sentiment.

“Now, the left media wants to go out there and report and say this guy is a victim of because we’re, you know, anti Somalia, no we’re not.”

The Homeland Security Secretary also insisted that communication with FIFA had been ongoing.

“We work closely with FIFA, and the administration, on a regular basis, we talk to FIFA and their directors constantly.”

He concluded:

“Anybody that was denied, we made the case for and showed them why they were denied.”

From Rejection to Redemption

Artan’s story has become one of the defining off-field narratives of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A referee who arrived in America dreaming of making history instead found himself detained, removed from the tournament and sent home.

Yet within days, football’s governing bodies in Europe and Africa united to deliver a message of support.

While the World Cup will proceed without him, Omar Artan’s career has not been derailed.

Instead, the Somali official now prepares to make a different kind of history when he walks onto the pitch in Salzburg next month as the first African referee ever entrusted with a major UEFA final.

For many across Africa, it is a reminder that while his World Cup dream may have been denied, his place among football’s elite remains firmly intact.
