Arsenal are back in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals but not in the manner many expected.

A drab 0-0 draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium was just enough to seal progression, thanks to their 1-0 first-leg advantage.

While the result is a historic milestone, a second consecutive semi-final appearance for the first time in the club’s history, the performance has sparked serious debate.

Coming from Mikel Arteta’s rallying cry of “no fear, pure fire”, what unfolded was anything but explosive.

Arsenal managed just one shot on target, raising fresh concerns about their attacking edge at a crucial stage of the season.

Flickers Instead of Flames

The Gunners’ display lacked spark, intensity, and attacking conviction, which have been a worrying trend following their recent defeat to AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Sporting nearly punished them twice:

  • Geny Catamo struck the post before half-time
  • Substitute João Simões fired narrowly wide late on

Yet, Arsenal’s defense held firm. Arteta acknowledged the physical toll on his squad after navigating a brutal schedule:

“There is a reason why we are the only English team in the competition, because this league and this schedule takes the hell out of you and it’s very difficult to do what we’ve done,” said Arteta.

“When I see them track back when we lose the ball, the habits that they have, it’s just amazing.”

“That’s why I know what they are doing, these players.”

Declan Rice

Rice’s Warrior Spirit & Leadership Rise

One of the night’s standout stories came from Declan Rice, who defied fitness concerns to deliver a commanding performance.

Arteta revealed just how unlikely his involvement was:

“Declan yesterday, he was shattered, he had no chance to play today, he wasn’t feeling good at all today, [but] he played 94 minutes at the level that he’s on,” said Arteta.

“Piero [Hincapie] the same, every single player is putting everything through the line to contribute, to give their best, and I really value that from the team.”

“They made the decision [to make Rice captain] because Declan has earned the status, the role, the way he’s taken ownership in difficult moments.”

“He’s a great leader, he’s a top player for us, and I love that the players take that ownership.”

Rice backed it up statistically too, leading the team in

touches (76),

completed passes (60), and

pass accuracy (96.8%).

 Arteta Fires Back at Critics

Amid growing scrutiny over Arsenal’s recent form, including exits from the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Arteta didn’t hold back in his response to critics.

“I wish that we were doing the Arsenal documentary this season, and you can film the last 48 hours and know everything that has been said [about us],” he said.

“But we are watching the series in July, and then we have to ask ourselves the question, we are watching the movies and say, ‘OK, where does Arsenal place?’

“I think all of us will say they are in the bottom three.”

“So what are we talking about, guys? Please, enjoy where we are as a club. If someone doesn’t want to do it, so be it.”

Arteta says perspective is needed, even if performances aren’t perfect.

Warning Signs Ahead of Manchester City Clash

While Arsenal march on in Europe, concerns linger, especially with a blockbuster clash looming against Manchester City.

Their lack of attacking threat could prove costly against stronger opposition. Across Europe, rivals are producing high-octane performances:

  • Bayern Munich edged Real Madrid 4-3
  • Paris Saint-Germain crushed Liverpool 4-0 on aggregate
  • Atletico Madrid battled past Barcelona

Questions are being asked whether Arsenal’s controlled, functional style can go all the way.

 Semi-Final Showdown Confirmed

Arsenal’s reward? A mouthwatering clash against Atletico Madrid.

Despite their struggles, Arteta remains confident:

“One hundred per cent,” Arteta said when asked if the result can serve as springboard for their meeting with City.

“This is a massive push to win the semifinal of the Champions League. It’s extremely tough and we know what we’ve done.”

“We deserve it, fully deserve it as well, and we’re going to enjoy it because we deserve it.

“My message [to the players] was gratitude to them. I know the effort and the commitment that they have put in.”

“There’s a lot of work behind it.”

“We’ve done something that has never been done in the history of our club in 140 years, so that tells you the difficulty of that, and we had to do it in a very special way, missing a lot of important players.”

Sporting CP Reacts to UCL Elimination

Sporting boss Rui Borges felt his side deserved more:

“The word ‘proud’ is the right word for all the players for what they have done for these two games.”

“I thought we deserved more and potentially extra-time. The character and the personality to fight one of the best teams in Europe was amazing.”

“We had the best opportunities and Arsenal didn’t create that much in our penalty area, here and in Lisbon.”
