NFF Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, has weighed in on Jay-Jay Okocha’s recent criticism of the quota system in Nigerian National Team football.
Okocha, a Nigerian football legend, expressed his disapproval of the NFF quota system.
The former Super Eagles captain who earned 73 caps, took to social media to voice his opinion, stating, “All I want is victory for the Super Eagles – To hell with the quota system.”
Eguavoen, however, seems to have a different perspective on the matter. When asked about Okocha’s comments, he emphasized that newly-appointed Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has the final say on team selections.
“Quota system or no quota system, Eric Chelle is in charge,” Eguavoen said on Brila FM’s ‘No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze.’
Eguavoen continued, “He has watched some local games, some international games, and has been following Nigerian football for a very long time. He knows where every player comes from, whether it’s Benin, Sevilla, or Spain.”
Eguavoen emphasizes that the NFF is willing to give Chelle the freedom to make his own decisions, regardless of the quota system. “If he says this is how he wants it, so be it.”
